The National Women’s Team held its preliminary training camp at the Liverpool Catholic Club, NSW on December 18-19, 2010. The squad consisted of 16 players and 2 reserves. There are 5 NWT members currently playing in North America who will return in time for the Women’s World Championships in Newcastle from February 1-6, 2011.
The Liverpool Catholic Club facilities provided an excellent venue to carry out all of the camp activities. The rink includes a gym and hard court area and is adjacent to the club and a new hotel. The camp started at 6 AM with strength & conditioning testing and shooting tests. Afterwards, the Team retired to the club conference room where they were given a presentation by Chris Nunn, Australian Paralympic Team, Head Coach. This was followed by a 2 1/2 hour ice session and then more discussion time at the club. After a hard 12 hour day the players went off to their Sydney billets for a well deserved rest.
The Sunday ice session was held at Penrith Ice Palace. The Team had lunch nearby and after a short meeting dispersed for home. The camp was very useful in identifying areas to work on and preparations that are needed for the World Championship tournament. Everyone will continue their training programs and play in the AWIHL. The next time the players will all get together will be at the pre-tournament camp in Myuna Bay January 22nd.
